Fiction Editing Services FAQs

Great question! It depends on a lot of factors, but if you’re looking for guidance on structural issues with your plot or characterization, then Developmental Editing is right for for you. If your plot, pacing, and characterization are solid, but you fresh eyes on the work to polish your sentences, improve cadence, correct grammar, punctuation, typos, etc., then Line/Copy Editing is the ticket. If your book has been through all of the above, and you just need a final check before hitting publish/send to catch any final typos or formatting issues, then go for Proofreading.

The first step is to contact me! Fill out the form, and I’ll get back with you as quickly as possible.

The sooner the better! My calendar fills up quickly, so if you need something completed by a certain date, book early!

Each job is unique, and turn around time varies depending on the scope of the project. I list approximate completion times under each type of edit on that specific page.

My schedule fills on a first-come, first-served basis. I do keep a waitlist, and I’m happy to add you to it. If a cancellation opens sooner in my schedule, I’ll contact you!

I’ll get back with you, and we can discuss your project in more detail. I require a 10-page sample edit on any new projects/clients I take on to ensure we are a good match (the price of that will be deducted from your deposit if you decide to book with me). I’ll send the sample edit back to you with notes, and you can read through my suggestions and ask any questions you may have. If everything works for both of us, I’ll get you on the schedule!

A 25% non-refundable deposit of project total is due up front to secure your spot on my schedule. The balance is then due upon completion of the project, before my final edits and notes are released to you. All invoices and payments are through PayPal.

Indicate that on the contact form, and we can discuss what you need and the best way to schedule it!

Each pass includes one complete read-through of the manuscript with Track Changes and appropriate editorial notes included. If additional passes are requested, they will be charged accordingly.

I make every effort to accommodate any schedule changes, and will do my best to shuffle my schedule to accommodate you. But if you must cancel the project entirely, any deposits paid are forfeited.

To answer that question, I suggest reading this excellent article by Allison K. Williams which talks about the prices of a good edit and why it’s so valuable to authors: https://thewritersbloc.net/make-professional-editing-work-you
